Lumi on “Spasm”

Spasm

A magical mentor who teaches math by talking with your child.

Spasm is a magical learning adventure for children. The child chooses a magical mentor, and that mentor becomes a living character they can genuinely talk to - about the adventure, about a question they got stuck on, or about something else entirely. The mentor teaches the times tables, and it never simply hands over the answer: when the child is stuck it teaches the reasoning through a smaller example, and adapts until the child can solve the original question themselves.

The problem

Children practice their times tables by repetition, and repetition alone can make learning feel like work. A worksheet cannot tell the difference between a child who knows an answer and a child who guessed it. It cannot answer a question either, so when a child gets stuck the only thing left to give them is the answer.

2 / 14

The idea

Turn times-table practice into a living magical adventure with a mentor the child can actually talk to. The learning is not decorated with magic - it happens inside a conversation with a magical being who is teaching them. The child is not answering a quiz. They are being taught by someone.

  • This is the distinction the whole product rests on: not a math quiz with a fantasy skin.

The magic mentor

The child chooses an avatar, and that avatar becomes their magical mentor - a character with its own voice that stays with them through the adventure. The mentor is powered by Lumi, so the conversation is real rather than a branching script. The child can ask it questions, tell it about something unrelated, ask for help, or answer creatively, and it responds to what they actually said.

How it works

Talk, learn, solve, earn a relic, continue the adventure. The child speaks to the mentor out loud and the mentor answers in its own voice, and every few exchanges it may ask whether they are ready to search for a magical relic. Saying yes opens a riddle - a times table question - and reasoning their way through it moves them closer to the relic. Free talk is capped at five exchanges between riddles, and the beta allows three riddles a day.

  • The question is the only thing on the screen as text. Everything the mentor says is spoken.

Why the AI matters

The conversation is live, not a fixed script with a few branches. That matters because the useful thing a teacher does is respond to the particular mistake in front of them, and a script cannot know which mistake a child is about to make. The mentor reads what the child actually wrote - the wrong answer, the half-formed idea, the question underneath the question - and teaches from there.

  • A scripted tutor has to guess the child in advance. This one does not have to.
6 / 14

The learning engine

The adventure starts with hard times-table riddles rather than climbing from 1 x 1. When the child does not know one, the mentor never states the answer. It teaches the reasoning through another example - 7 bags with 8 stars in each, so how many stars in 5 bags, and can you use that to get to 7 - and keeps adapting the explanation until the child can solve the original question themselves.

  • The withholding is enforced in the product, not just requested of the model.
7 / 14

The game loop

Magical relics, then the Master Test, then the Ultra Magical Relic. Relics are earned through the reasoning, so unlocking one feels like learning a spell and using it rather than collecting a badge for a right answer. The Master Test is the ultimate challenge - the child has to demonstrate mastery across the times tables, and the Ultra Magical Relic is what it awards.

  • Progress is held by the game, not declared by the mentor - the Master Test cannot be talked open.

The business

Today, everything. Spasm is free through the beta - every feature, no paywall, nothing charged. In the planned tier, free covers the times tables - the whole core adventure, from choosing a mentor and talking to it through the magical relics, the Master Test and the Ultra Magical Relic. Math challenges beyond the times tables will be $1 a month - the one paid tier, and nothing is charged yet.

What the demo shows

  1. A grown-up signs in first - email and password, or Google. The adventure belongs to that account.
  2. Choose a magical mentor - the avatar the child picks becomes the character who teaches them, and its face sits beside every line it says.
  3. Talk to the mentor out loud. Press the microphone and speak; the mentor answers in its own voice, and it brings the conversation back to the journey.
  4. The mentor asks a riddle - a times table question - and it starts hard rather than at 1 x 1. Between riddles the child gets five exchanges of free talk; then the mentor asks for the riddle, and taking it is the only way to keep talking.
  5. If the child is stuck, the mentor does not give the answer - it teaches the idea through a smaller example.
  6. The child uses that idea to solve the original question themselves.
  7. Solving it moves them along the relic hunt, and the relic is the reward for the reasoning, not for the answer.
  8. Three riddles a day in the beta. When the third is solved the adventure closes and says exactly when it opens again, 24 hours on.

Investor view

What it is

A magical learning adventure for children in which a chosen mentor teaches the times tables through open conversation, challenge and a relic hunt.

Who it is for

Children learning their times tables, and the parent choosing what goes on the phone. The child is the user; the parent is the one who has to trust it.

Why it is different

Most practice apps ask a question, mark it, and move on. Spasm refuses to state the answer and teaches the reasoning instead, inside a conversation the child can steer.

How the AI is actually used

The mentor is a live model conversation, not a branching script - it reads the child's actual wording and teaches from that specific mistake. The parts that must not be improvised - what the answer is, whether a relic is earned, whether mastery has been reached - are held as game state outside the model.

What is free, what is paid

Free: Today, everything. Spasm is free through the beta - every feature, no paywall, nothing charged. In the planned tier, free covers the times tables - the whole core adventure, from choosing a mentor and talking to it through the magical relics, the Master Test and the Ultra Magical Relic. Paid: Math challenges beyond the times tables will be $1 a month - the one paid tier, and nothing is charged yet.

The growth loop

A child who is genuinely being taught keeps coming back to the same mentor, and the relic journey gives the return a shape. What is not yet demonstrated is whether that turns into parents telling other parents.

Lumi's take

Strongest

The refusal to give the answer. It is the one design decision that separates this from every quiz app, and it is enforced in the product rather than asked of the model.

Weakest

$1 a month for additional challenges is a very small amount of money per user, so the business only works at a scale nothing here has reached yet.

What must be proven

That children keep talking to the mentor past the first session, that the teaching actually gets a stuck child to the answer without being told it, and that a parent will pay the dollar. None of these are demonstrated yet.

Next thing to fix

Instrument the stuck-child path - how many children reach the answer themselves after the mentor teaches the smaller example, and how many give up. Without that number the central claim is a design intention rather than a result.

First-round funding need

Funding sum is not a valuation. The first-round funding sum is the amount the venture needs to operate, build, launch and grow during its initial runway. It is calculated from expected operating costs, development resources, fundraising costs, marketing, reserves and contingency - not from an early-stage valuation.

A software venture funds people, infrastructure and reach. There is no physical unit to engineer, tool or manufacture, so the whole budget goes into building, running and growing the product for its first 18 months.

The Dream x Destiny operating layer and the funding platform's costs are part of the funding requirement, sized into the sum along with every other line. The founder does not pay them separately upfront: they are budgeted inside the amount raised rather than taken off the top of it. Dream x Destiny's platform revenue is a fixed operating fee, not a percentage of capital raised.

What the agents said

Spasm has no Gemini, Grok, monday or ChatGPT assessment. It was rebuilt directly rather than run through the Adventure floors that produce those artefacts, so there is no agent reading to quote. What exists is the product and the reading of it above.
